The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) closed Monday’s session in positive territory, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index settling at 166,564.06 points, up 154.81 points or 0.09 per cent from the previous close of 166,409.25 points, Business Recorder reported.

It was a volatile session. The index moved higher at the open, came under selling pressure in the morning, recovered around midday and then slipped again to an intraday low of 165,585.42. A sharp afternoon recovery carried it past the 166,500 level to an intraday high of 166,989.76 before it gave back some gains into the close.

According to Topline Securities’ post-market report cited by Business Recorder, investors stayed cautious, weighing domestic inflation concerns against easing international crude oil prices. Buying was mainly seen in select heavyweight stocks from the commercial banking and cement sectors, while selective profit-taking capped the broader market’s upside.

Trading activity cooled from the previous session. Volume on the all-share index fell to 443.43 million shares from 825.47 million, while the value of shares traded declined to Rs17.73 billion from Rs23.12 billion, Business Recorder reported. APP’s market summary carried the same picture: ready-market volume of 443.432 million shares and traded value of Rs17.731 billion, with total market capitalisation easing to Rs18.293 trillion from Rs18.389 trillion.

Of the 496 companies traded, 137 advanced, 319 declined and 40 remained unchanged. Cnergyico PK led the volume chart with 93.11 million shares, followed by Pervez Ahmed Co with 45.18 million and TPL Properties with 30.10 million shares.

The positive close follows a strong previous week, when the KSE-100 snapped a five-week losing streak, gaining 4,034.37 points or 2.5 per cent week-on-week to close at 166,409.25, Business Recorder noted, with renewed optimism over progress in regional peace talks supporting buying.
