Saudi Arabia has rolled over Pakistan’s $3 billion loan, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb confirmed on Wednesday, speaking to reporters at Parliament House after a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance.
The minister said the facility had been extended for a “reasonable period” but did not disclose the new maturity date. The $3 billion short-term facility was agreed in April this year and matured on 31 October under its three-month term.
Aurangzeb said Pakistan did not require any additional financial assistance from Saudi Arabia and could meet its external financing requirements even without the proposed $10 billion United States liquidity support facility.
Saudi Arabia has provided Pakistan with $8 billion in short-term financing in total. Of that, $5 billion has already been extended until December 2028.
The finance minister also said the International Monetary Fund’s Executive Board is expected to review Pakistan’s $7 billion programme in December this year.
Pakistan raised $3 billion from international markets in the first week of September, attracting an order book of $6 billion. The minister said the country’s foreign exchange reserves cover around three months of imports.
